Historic Montgomery Wine and Food Trail logo

Historic Montgomery is an accurate title. Third oldest city of Texas, and home to some landmark events in early Texas.

Our visitors center, flagship for the Montgomery Historical Society is the historic home of Nat Hart Davis, and acts as our First Aid station during the event. It's on the main drag, Liberty Street, also known as State Highway 149, nicknamed Montgomery Trace. 308 Liberty. Inside you can experience the modern melt away, browse homelife in a bygone era.

The home had it's beginnings from an earlier log house that was obtained as barter for services rendered by Nat, one of two early practicing attorneys of the area. The white building beside the house was Mr. Hart's law office after his growing family began requiring expansion of the modest home.

Prior to 1837 Montgomery was a trading post situated a mile North of the present site. Owen and Margaret Montgomery Shannon, colonists with Stephen F. Austin had settled on their land grant and began trading with local indians and fellow colonists. In July of 1837 an ad was published for the sale of lots in the newly organized town. The article stated that a new county was being planned and the new town was expected to be the seat of justice. At the time, early Montgomery County was more than twice the size of today's borders. It went East to Trinity River and West to the Brazos. The town remained county seat until 1889.

Additional details of the history in Montgomery can be obtained in the N. H. Davis Pioneer Complex and Museum, 308 Liberty St. Montgomery, Texas 77356 (936) 597-4899?
